Privacy Policy
This policy covers the Kettle Command mobile app and website (kettlecommand.com, formerly homebrew.evanfarrell.com), together "the service". The service is run by Evan Farrell ("we", "us"). Questions: evan@kettlecommand.com.
We collect what the service needs to work, use it only to run the service, and never sell it.
What we collect
- Account: your name, email address and username, and your password stored only as a one-way hash. The website records the time and IP address of your sign-ins.
- Brewing records: what you enter or that the service works out for you: recipes, batches, measurements and readings, notes, schedules, inventory, yeast records, equipment, water profiles, SOPs, packaging and shipment records.
- Photos: photos you choose to add to batches, recipes or your profile. The app asks for camera or photo library access only when you add a photo, and you can say no.
- Device telemetry: if you connect brewing controllers or sensors, the readings they send (temperatures, setpoints, heater power, gravity and similar), their status and events, and device details such as serial number and firmware version. Controllers and sensors are optional.
- Push notification tokens: if you allow notifications, a token for your phone and its platform (iOS or Android), so we can send the alerts you turn on (timers, fermentation, controller and stock alerts).
- Brewery address and location: optional. If you enter your brewery's address, we look up its latitude, longitude and elevation to work out the boiling point at your altitude. We also keep your time zone so times show correctly.
- AI assistant: if you use the brewing assistant, the messages you type, its replies, and the brewing data it reads to answer (for example the recipe, batch, readings or inventory you ask about).
We do not use advertising, advertising identifiers or third-party analytics, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
How we use it
- To run the service: show your records, calculate brewing numbers, run your controllers, send the notifications you turn on.
- To send account email: invitations, sign-in help and password resets.
- To answer your questions in the assistant.
- To keep the service secure and fix problems.
Who processes it for us
We share data only with the companies below, only what each needs, to provide the service:
- DigitalOcean: hosts our servers and database, where your account, records and photos are stored (United States).
- Amazon Web Services: sends our email (Amazon SES) and carries messages between the service and your controllers (AWS IoT).
- Expo: delivers push notifications to your phone, using your push token and the notification text.
- Google: turns your brewery address into a location and elevation (Google Maps Geocoding and Elevation), and shows the map on the website's settings page.
- Anthropic: provides the AI model behind the assistant. Your question and the brewing data the assistant reads to answer it are sent to Anthropic to produce the reply. Under Anthropic's commercial terms this data is not used to train its models.
We may also disclose data if the law requires it.
Cookies and local storage
The website uses a session cookie to keep you signed in and stores your light or dark theme choice in your browser. The app keeps your sign-in token in your phone's secure storage.
How long we keep it
We keep your data while your account exists. Assistant conversations and notifications stay until you delete them or your account. When you delete your account, your data is deleted from our database right away; copies in our backups are overwritten within 30 days.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time in the app (Settings > Account > Delete account) or on the delete account page. This deletes your account and everything in it: recipes, batches, readings, notes, photos, inventory, equipment, assistant conversations, push tokens and settings. Controllers and sensors you own are released so they can be set up again. A recipe that another brewer's batch uses directly is kept for that batch, without your name or photos. You can also email evan@kettlecommand.com from your account's email address and we will delete it for you.
Your choices and rights
You can see and change your data in the app and on the website, turn notifications off, and leave out the optional address, photos, controllers and assistant. You can ask us for a copy of your data, or to correct or delete it, by emailing us. Depending on where you live you may have further rights under local law; we will honor them.
Security
Data travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS and TLS), passwords are stored hashed, and controllers connect with their own certificates. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data.
Children
The service is for adults of legal drinking age where they live. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13 (or the minimum age in their country). If you believe a child has given us data, email us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date above, and tell you in the app or by email when a change matters.
